1
1
' 1.3 GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF AREA
' The elevation of the area ranges from 6,700 feet to
around 7,800 fret. Principal drainages are South Canyon Creek,
Alkali Creek, and the Colorado River. Mountain slopes are
quite steep with many rather narrow valleys, however, portions
' of the South Canyon and Alkali drainages are fairly wide.
' The area is part of the Grand Hogback are of Garfield County,
Colorado.
' 1.3.1 Climate
' The average annual precipitation is estimated at 18
inches. The soil temperature regime is Cryic. Soils have
1 a mean annual temperature of higher than 0 degrees C (32
' degrees F) but lower than 8 degrees C (47 degrees F). Soil
temperatures in this Cryic regime vary according to degree
' of drainage, soil saturation, presence or absence of "0"
17orizons and depth to lithic or paralithic contact.
1
1.3.2 Land Use
' Historically, the area has been used for livestock
' grazing with some native hay in the meadows and valleys.
Limited amounts of timber have been cut and some fairly large
stands of pinyon-juniper are still to be found.
1

' -3-
