IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII L=~; -- ,~--_i=- ;,~,
999 UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE L ~
SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE
RECLAMATION OF MINING AREA _ _ _
(E.A. Rossum Pit)
,., i~ ,i
v~~J~TL' _ _. rr~n ~.l.
J. ~as
The Areas I & II to be mined are presently in pasture with a pond
in Area I. The major range site is Overflow. The Overflow Range Site
consist of gently sloping to level soils that are sandy to clay loam
alluvial, moderately deep to deep. The potential native vegetation for
this site would include switchgrass, western wheatgrass, blue grams,
Indian grass, side-oats grams and slender wheatgrass.
Here are some grasses that have the best chances in the above condi-
tions for reseeding without irrigation. This is assuming that all areas
are covered with a minimum of 6 inches of top soil.
(Each grass seeding rate is for 100% and a percentage of each can be used
in a seeding mixture.)
Fairway wheatgrass
Pubescent wheatgrass (Luna)
Thickspike wheatgrass (Critana)
Side-oats grams (Vaughn)
switchgrass (Nebr. 28)
Western wheat (Barton)
Alfalfa (Ladak)
611 Pure
1811 "
1111 "
911 ~~
411 "
1611 "
Not more
any mixt
wanted.
Live Seed/Acre
~~ ~~ / ~~
n u / n
u u / n
~~ ~~ / ~~
n n / n
than 111/Acre in
are if a legume is
Example of a mixture:
Thickspike wheatgrass (Critana) 1111 x 50% = S 1/211 PLS/Ac.
Side-oats grams (Vaughn) 911 x 25% = 2 1/411 PLS /A c.
switchgrass (Nebr. 28) 4111 x 25% = 1 1/811 PLS/Ac.
100% 8 7/811 PLS/Ac.
Time of seeding is to be made immediately prior to anticipated periods
of precipitation which would not be later than April 15th, or during Octo-
ber 15th to December, so that germination will occur in the spring.
When reclaiming the mined area, each site should be considered sepa-
rate for soil texture and available moisture. For sandier soil, it would
be best to include side-oats grams and switchgrass; and if salts are
present, then western wheatgrass should be used in the mixture. Drill
the grass seed noC more than 1 inch in depth. Slopes should be 3:1 or
flatter, and mulching the new seeding with straw will greatly improve the .
chances of success. It will help prevent wind erosion and shade the
ground to help retain moisture. 400011/Ac. of long straw should be anchor-
ed ivunediately after distributing, with mulcher blades that will not cut
the straw.
