Mine, centered in Section 28, Township 33 South, Range 67 West, Las
Anitnas County- TWo shut-in gas wells dQwngradient were implicated as-the possible
source of the seep. Field investigation revealed inethane.in the brdderiliead of the eastern
well, the k~ickefwire 28.70; the bradenhead a19o bad 20 pounds of pressure. Nb pressure
was found in the casing or bradenhead in the western well, the Picketwire 28-11.
Investigation of the soil adjacent to the wells, using a Flame Ionization Device (FID),
revealed Ao methane. The FID is capable of measuring .0001 percent hydrocarbons,
Four monitor wells installed by Basin Mine consultants (C3teystone) near the Picketwire
28-11 had varying levels of methane When tasted with the FID. These monitor wells are
37 feet to 105 feet away from the Pickctwire 26-i I. Two monitor wells neaz the
Picketwire 28-10 were tested with the F]D; there was no gas in these monitor wells.
StrESSed or dead vegetation i6 present at thcseep,.The areas of"dead vegetation, the gas
wells and the monitor wells were mapped using a Global 1'ositioa System (CPS)
instrument capable of 1 to 3 meter aoctuary with differerttial correction. The gas wells
were drilled in October, 1990, An infrared aerial photo dated August 26; 1940 was
ordered from the EROS Data Center (see attached photo). An overlay of the GPS map
was made and attached to the infrared photo, it shows the stressed and dead vegetation
existed in almost the same spots before the gas wells were drilled.
The gas wells were never commercially produced. The Picketwire wells were plugged
October 9a' and 10`h by t:reoMet. You witnessed the plugging of the wells. The ground
arouttd the gas wells was excavated to approximately ] 0 to 1 S feet below ground surface
(bgs). The FIp was used to check the soil around the well casing in the excavation, no
DEPARTMENt of NANPAt P~SWPCES: Grea z.vr4tmer, Efewn•e D'eMcr
COGCC CGMMI991GN: Tan Mn Gay • Blleq Clee - 9rucp wMson • MlcheH pled • Ape PMllp+ • Doniel +kreberz - 9leppen 5annendery
CDGCG STAPF: Plcf,+b' GflenOnO.
