3.0 METHANE MONITORING AND RESULTS
A summary of the most recent and historical field analytical results is included in Table 1. Field gas
measurements from the monitoring points had methane concentrations ranging from 0.0 percent in monitoring
points B2, B9, B 15, B20, B22, B25, and B26, to 90.1 percent in monitoring point B3. Carbon dioxide and
oxygen were also measured and their concentrations varied with the amount of methane. As methane in the
soils increases, it displaces oxygen and cazbon dioxide, creating anerobic conditions that result in death of
vegetation and staining ofthe soils. Historical concentrations ofinethane, oxygen, and carbon dioxide in each
monitoring point aze displayed on the monitoring point concentration diagrams located in Appendix B.
Additional monitoring was undertaken at the former site of the Golden Eagle Mine in 2004 and 2005. This
monitoring consisted of the measurement of gas emanating from the former mine's souttr airshaft location. At
this location, a valve exists to access the shaft. The valve, when opened, exhibited positive pressure. This
flow was monitored for the presence of methane using a Lantec GA-90. The methane concentration at this
location was measured at 88.7 percent during the 2004 sampling event and 88.6 percent during the 2005
sampling event.
Effected vegetation in the seepage area was also examined. Figure 3 shows the effected areas as delineated
during 2000, 2004 and 2005. The effected acreage was about 146 acres in 2000. The effected acreage in
2005 was the same as in 2004, approximately 32 acres.
' 292-Meth_Q 1.29.05).doc 3-1
