. ~
Memo to Boulay & Berry
Bear III Landslide
page 6
length of time. I do not believe that the steep wedge of clay-rich colluvium cou{d have remained
stable for any appreciable length of time, in contrast to local occurrences of severe landsliding,
while a significant inflow of groundwater was occurring from the adjacent bedrock coal seam
subcrop. These observations lead me to conclude that some recent changed condition in the local
groundwater regime has caused groundwater to begin discharging beneath this steep colluvial
slope, causing the landslide.
Further, it is my opinion that the geothermal groundwater discharge referred to by W WE as the
"Edwazds Portal spring" is an expression of the same warm groundwater seepage evident within
the eastern half of the extensional head scarp trough, directly up slope from the spring. Previous
investigators did not observe these warm vapors and seep azeas in the scarp trough directly up
slope from the spring, so there was no evidence then to link the spring with a potential
groundwater source at the base of the slide.
cc: Mike Long
Susan McCannon
Harry Posey
Jim Burnell
doc: M:\Coal\JAP\beaz3sld.wpd
jP/JP
