I wholeheartedly concur that Basin's
outstanding work towards rapid and high quality reclamation, as well as the willingness
demonstrated by you and your staff to work with DMG to accomplish the task deserves to
be recognized. As further commemoration of your award, please find enclosed a
photograph of you and Ron Thompson receiving the award from Governor Romer and
MLRB Chairman William Cohan.
The Division of Minerals and Geology was understandably disappointed when it was
announced in December 1995 that the Golden Eagle Mine would close. As you know, a
large part of our charge is to see that mined lands are returned to a productive use
following mining. The teamwork approach adopted by Basin, coupled with the many long
hours of hard work by Basin employees has ultimately led to excellent reclamation at the
site and is an example of how well permanent mine closure and reclamation activities can
be conducted.
The Division wishes to commend Basin Resources for it's efforts towards assuring timely and
successful reclamation. Your efforts will ultimately advance the cause of mining for all of
us interested in mining and mined land reclamation. Thank you for your continued
dedication to successful mined land reclamation in Colorado and, again, congratulations on
your ]996 Mined Land Reclamation Award.
Sincerely,
Susan J. c a ~ort
Coal Prog Supervisor
enclosure
cc: Kent Gorham, DMG
