SEP-23-2004 13 05 BUSINESS OPTIONS
970 249 8421 P.01i01
~ ~ ~~ ' b5G'~S~u~y
To: Division of Minerals and Geology/ RECEIVED
From: Friends of Spring Creek Mesa ~~'0 ~~ ~~P 2 3 200 "
Re: _Maldorson Pit, Montrose -Permit # M 2003037 Division of Minerals&Geology
Ladies and Gentlemen:
~e,,,e,,~ fem.
I'm writing this letter as a follow-up to the Board's decision regarding
the Maldorson Sand and Gravel Mine. At that time, we felt that the
applicant had not obtained sufficient hydrological data to be able to
mine to their proposed depths and be certain that they would remain
above the groundwater. The Board agreed and issued Maldorson a
permit that allowed him to mine to only a depth of 13 ft while
concurrently monitoring groundwater for a year. Once the year is up,
they will be able to mine to their proposed depths.
Once the Board's decision was made, Maldorson drilled monitoring
wells on the properly and has been measuring the groundwater depths
on a weekly basis. Those well logs are sent weekly to the local DMG
field office and have also been made available to us. Now that
Maldorson has this groundwater data, an informed decision can be
made as to what depth they can mine and remain above the
groundwater. We feel that the highest groundwater levels have been
recorded and that the groundwater will be falling from now until the
year of monitoring is up. For that reason, we would not oppose the
Board allowing the applicant to mine to a level of 30 feet until the year
is up; but still require monitoring for the full year. Also, if groundwater
is encountered, Maldorson will still need to backfill in order to stay
above the water table.
We feel that the new hydrological information supports this decision.
It will also allow Maldorson to drop their operation out of the view of
the surrounding neighbors rather than staying up high at the shallow
depth to which they are currently being restricted.
Thafik you for your consideration to this matter.
~.
S.i~nc~ernel~y, `
Emily Schneider
President
TOTAL P.01
