PERtiIT <br />SOMERSET MINE <br />DE:.TA AND GUNNISON CGT;TTTIES, COLORADO <br />The United States Department of the =nterior, Office of Surface Mining <br />P.eclamation and Enforcement (OSM), has approved, with conditions, a 5-year <br />permit for J. 5. Steel Mining Co., Inc. to mine coal at its Somerset ^ine. <br />The Somerset mine surface coal mine is located in Delta and Gunnisor. Counties, <br />Colorado, adjacent to the town of Somerset. The mine has been in operaticn <br />since 1902. The proposed permit area will cover approximately 2?75 aces, of <br />which appre:;imately 1d70 acres are Federal. Fifty seven (57) acres have beer_ <br />disturbed to date fcr surface facilities. Maximum mine production is at a <br />rate of 900,000 tons of coal per year. <br />Any person with ar. interest which is or nay be adversely affected by this <br />Federal petit approval action may recuest an adjudicatory hearing on the <br />final decision within 30 days after publicaticn of this rutice, in accordance <br />with Sec:'_en 514(c) of the Surface Mining Contrcl and Reclamation Act <br />(Sl1CR.9). Any hearing will be governed by provisions of 5 L'.S.C. Sections 15G1.4(c) and 1506.6, nu*_ice is hereby given <br />that Colorado Mined land Re_lamation Divisicn has completed a technical <br />analysis (TA) for the permit application package for the Somerset nine, Delta <br />and Gunnison Counties, Colorado. OSM has supclemented this Td with its cwn <br />environmental assessm_rt (E.4). OSM's recommendation tc approve Somerset (MP°) <br />mining plat. and the permit application with conditions is fn accordance with <br />Secticns 510 and 523 of SMCRA. OSM's analysis is tha*_ no significant <br />environmental impacts would result from such approval.
