Dept. of F~aiural Reso!irce~
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203
RE: Seneca II-W Vegetation Sampling, Summer Field Season 1983
Dear Mr. Herron,
The resampling program for vegetation baseline data at Seneca II-W has
entered the field phase with location and erection of plot exclosures
at sampling points. As of June 9th, all affected area and reference
area exclosures have been placed in the field. The placement of ex-
closures in the field is a little later than normal this year because
of a late winter season. Snow and muddy conditions restricted access
much later than usual, however, it also delayed the livestock turn in
date so that little or no livestock grazing has occurred on the permit
area or reference area locations. The lateness of the season may also
affect the field sampling time frame by moving it into late July or
possibly early August.
On June 1st I contacted Dan Mathews about a needed change in the aspen
reference area location. Field surveys from the previous day resulted in
positive location of only the mixed brush and sagebrush grassland reference
areas. Positive location of the aspen reference area was not possible after
an extensive search, review of the maps, and comparison of the summary data
for the original area. It was decided to relocate the reference area and
complete a sampling program for the new reference area and affected area
which includes production, cover and shrub/three density measurements. The
attached map shows the location of the new reference area. It is located
immediately to the south of the southeast corner of the Seneca II-W pro-
posed permit area. A benefit of this relocation is that the new reference
area represents the various aspects of the aspen affected area very well.
