Lunp
Drvisiun Diretlur
Per your request, I have reviewed the proposed changes to the seed mix for the Cripple Creek
and Victor Gold Mine.
The composition of the mix has been streamlined considerably with some of the more aggressive
cool season grasses removed as per the Division's suggestion last year. The proposed seeding
rate is still excessive but a great improvement over last year's rate. As was discussed in last
year's review, the ideal rate for drill seeding would be 40-60 pure live seeds per square foot and
double that rate for broadcast seeding. This mix still has approximately 105 seeds per square
foot (not counting shrubs). However, deleting Fringed sagewort and Canada bluegrass (two
species with very small seeds) from the overall seed count, reduces the rate to approximately 70
seeds per square foot, which is not that unreasonable. A few species that could actually be pared
down with very little impact are Slender and Pubescent wheatgrass along with Mountain brome.
These species are very aggressive and their seed viability is usually very high. As a result, they
usually establish quite easily even with reduced numbers of seeds per square foot.
Basically, this seed mix is a substantial improvement over the mix CC&V has used in years past,
and even if applied at the proposed rate, establishment should not be a problem. Also, they have
adjusted their native versus introduced ratio in favor of the native species which should bode
well for the future composition of this reclaimed area. One final comment is that it is assumed
these rates are for PURE LIVE SEED. The mix does not make reference to this anywhere that I
noticed, but all rates should be in pounds of PURE LIVE SEED for the seeds per square foot
concept [o be effective.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
cc: Jim Stevens
AJ W/aj w
