III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Gorham, Kent 999
To: Ron Leef (E-mail)
Subject: Lorencito Complaint
Dear Mr. Leef
Dan Hernandez asked me to contact you about your concerns with the Lorencito Canyon coal operation. I am the lead
specialist for that area of the State. Dan and me will be conducting an inspection of the mine with regard to your concerns
and the mine operation in general next week. We will arrive in the area on Tuesday afternoon.
Your first concern was alleged coal dust in the Purgatoire River, immediately north of the coal loadout. Although it is
difficult to determine the presence of coal dust in the photo, we will thoroughly inspect areas adjacent to the coal loadout.
If dust has settled some 450 feet north of the loadout into the river, it will be abundant in areas adjacent to the loadout.
Your second concern was related to acquiring copies of the blast records. We will ask the operator to copy these records
and forward them to you following receipt. You also stated that your home has suffered violent shaking from the blasting
operations. We would like to place a seismograph at your home next week to determine the magnitude of this shaking.
Please let me know if this is acceptable to you. The device is portable and requires nothing more than access to your
property.
Your third concern was related to alleged poisonous gases in and adjacent to the mine pit area. The Division is interested
in reviewing the information that led you to the conclusion that poisonous gases are present in the visible dust cloud in the
photo. We are also in contact with the Air Quality Control Division regarding testing and/or monitoring to determine
whether poisonous gases are being produced during blasting operations.
As I mentioned, we will be conducting an inspection next week. We would like to meet with you and set up the
seismograph at that time, if that is acceptable to you. Please let me know as to your availability on Tuesday afternoon,
January 22, 2002.
Thank you.
KenT Gorham
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman St. Rm 215
Denver CO 80203
(303) 866-4931
