In 1986; however, mining began to
encounter ground water resulting in this water being pumped to the surface and
discharged to the west sediment pond: It is hypothesized that mining
operations may be dewatering an overlying perched aquifer; which are
relatively common within the Menefee Formation: Tt is possible; however, that
some inflow from the Pine Gulch drainage may be occurring: Continued
observation and monitoring will help to determine the source of this inflow.
To date; the amount of water being discharged to the west pond has been
minimal, If; however, mine dewatering causes either of the two sediment ponds
to discharge, National King Coal has committed to monitoring the parameters
listed in Table 2 within 24 hours after pond discharge at the alluvium well in
Hay Gulch: These results will be submitted to the Division with the regular
quarterly monitoring submittal:
Table 2
DEPTH-TO-WATER (FT) POTASSIUM
pH SODIUM
TEMPERATURE (°C) SULFATE
CONDUCTIVITY SULFIDE
TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLIDS ALUMINUM
TOTAL kARDNESS 80RON
CARBONATE CHROMIUM
BICARBONATE IRON
CALCIUM LEAD
CHLORIDE MANGANESE
FLUORIDE SELENIUM
MAGNESIUM
The operation is in compliance with the requirements of this section:
VI, Surface Water Hydroloyy - Rules 2:04.5; 2.04.7, 2.05.3(4), 2.05.6(3
Information on surface water hydrology can be found in Sections 2:04.7, 2.05.3
and 2.05.6 and Maps C-4 and C-9 of the permit application.
The surface facilities of the King Coal Mine are located in a small ephemeral
drainage basin which is tributary to Hay Gulch: The permit area and underground
mining extending to the south of the surface facilities and underly another small
ephemeral drainage basin which is tributary to Pine Gulch. Pine Gulch flows into
Hay Gulch approximately 4 miles be]ow the permit area: Hay Gulch is a tributary
of the La Plata River and their confluence is located about 8 miles downstream
(southwest) of the King Coal Mine:
-9-
