CNAPTERTHREE Emlronmental Consequences
Pipeline Corridor
Raptors
The effects of the pipeline on raptors would be less under the Agency Preferred Alternative than
under the Proposed Action. Areas that have not been surveyed for nests would be surveyed prior
to installation of the pipeline.
Other Species
The Draft EIS addressed potential effects to mule deer, elk, mountain lion, black beaz, upland
game birds, waterfowl, shorebirds, and fisheries and aquatic habitats. Potential effects to these
species and habitats under the Agency Preferred Alternative would be the same as those
described for the Proposed Action.
Parachute Site
Raptors
Since the evaporation ponds would be netted, potential effects to raptors associated with the
Proposed Action from eating waterfowl exposed to hypersaline waters would be eliminated
under the Agency Preferred Alternative.
llvaterjowl and Shorebirds
Since the process ponds would be netted, potential effects to waterfowl and shorebirds associated
with the Proposed Action would be eliminated under the Agency Preferred Alternative.
Other Species
The Drift EIS addressed potential effects to mule deer, other big game, upland game birds, and
fisheries and aquatic habitats. Potential effects to these other species and habitats under the
Agency Preferred Alternative would be the same as those described for the Proposed Action.
3,8.2 Unavoidable Adverse Impacts
Piceance Site
Many of the potential adverse effects of the project would be mitigated by the Agency Preferred
Alternative. Unavoidable adverse effects include the following:
• Foraging habitat for mule deer and other wildlife would be eliminated in the short- or long-
term from areas occupies by mining and processing facilities, but it would be replaced by
reclamation of disturbed azeas and by habitat enhancements elsewhere.
• Mule deer and other wildlife would be displaced from development azeas, and migration
movements across the Piceance Site would be modified.
• Hundreds of acres of mature pinyon juniper woodland would be removed. This would
reduce the availability of mule deer thermal and hiding cover and of woodland raptor nesting
habitat, even though some of the best woodland habitat would be preserved.
~Idlife 3-13
