L«nne,a
Laurel MD 20723 EattU11Vp Director
Michael 8. Long
Divismn D~reuor
Dear Mr. and Mrs. LaRosa:
Dan Hernandez of our office has copied me on the correspondence regarding your concerns about the
activities conducted on your property by Basin Resources, Inc. (BRI). As he stated, I am the lead
Environmental Protection Specialist for the Division of Minerals and Geology for this area of Colorado.
The day we received your initial letter dated November I5, 1997, 1 visited the mine sites in my area,
including the Golden Eagle mine. Unfortunately, 4-8 inches of snow covered the ground in the Rancho
Escondido area, rendering any preliminary evaluation of your concerns pointless. However, 1 did discuss
your concerns with Ron Thompson of BRI. He indicated that he had conversations with you in the past and
that some of the dead fall had been removed from the area. Apparently, there is additional material that you
feel should be removed.
The reclamation plan for the exploration sites covered under the exploration permit does not call for
replacement of trees or shrubs. If BRI has an agreement with you to replace trees, it is between you and
BRI and is not something that the Division can regulate. However, BRI is required by our Division to
complete the reclamation plan as approved under the permit.
In the meantime, when ground conditions allow thorough inspection, I will personally inspect the sites that
are on or near your property. If excessive erosion is occurring, BRI will be required to mitigate the situation
immediately. If there are other problems, such as weeds, trash, or inadequate vegetation, they will also be
documented and mitigated. I will notify you of the results of my inspection.
BRI is not cun•ently seeking bond release for disturbance on your property. A bond in excess of
$128,000.00 continues to remain fully in force for reclamation activities. At some point in the future, BRl
will likely request bond release for exploration activities, which may include your property. At that time
you will be notified and will have the opportunity to provide additional comments on the reclamation
conducted.
If you have any questions, please call or write.
Sinc rely,
~~~ ~~.
Ken[ Gorham
Environmental Protection Specialist
cc: Dan Hernandez, DMG
