Long
Division Director
(1) Alternative Gradation for Underdrain Pipe Bedding
(2) Gradation of One Secondary Underdrain Fill's Material
(Permit No: M-80-244)
In response to your request, I have reviewed the two specification
modification requests received from John Hardaway of CC&VG
yesterday (July 18, 1994), but dated July 14, 1994. These two most
recent requests for modification of technical specifications follow
up on discussions I had with David Kidd of Golder Associates, in
the presence of Mr. Hardaway, during my site inspection of July 14,
1994.
(1) Alternative Gradation for Underdrain Pipe Bedding
Golder Associates originally specified a well sorted, 3J4-inch
minus granular bedding material for use in bedding the
underdrain pipelines. In order to produce required road bed
material, Ames has produced a poorly sorted material, sized
between 3/4-inch and 3/8 inch, with very little fine fraction.
In my opinion, this material is acceptable as an alternative
for bedding of the underdrain pipelines, as long as the fine
fraction is minimized. Mr. Hardaway has requested that this
gradation be approved as an alternative for use in bedding the
underdrain pipelines, and that the original specification also
be retained, allowing them two alternatives. I have no
objection to this proposal.
(2) Gradation of One Secondary Underdrain Fill's Materials
I also do not object to the modification of the gradation
specification for the underdrain fill material to be placed in
the one specified secondary underdrain. This proposal
pertains only to the one certain valley, located in the most
southeast drainage of the Phase 1 Valley Leach Facility
