Elevation ranges from 2,073 meters (6,800
feet) to 2,560 meters (8,400 feet) within the area of intensive investigation,
but extends up to approximately 3,353 meters (11,000 feet) to the south in the
flat tops. Precipitation in the area averages 41 cm (16 inches) annually.
Temperature is subject to large seasonal and daily variations. In Jury, tem-
peratures range from an average high of 27oC (S1oF) to an average low of 6.7oC
(44oF). January temperatures range from O.OoC (32oF) to -17oC (1.4oF), re-
spectively.
Five major vegetation types occur in or adjacent to the permit area:
aspen, mountain shrub, sagebrush, grassland and cultivated land. The aspen
type is found in the highest areas of best soil moisture conditions predomi-
nantly on northerly facing slopes. Grasses make up approximately 15% of the
understory, major species being bromes (Bromus marginatus), bluegrasses (Poa
spp.), and sedges (Carex spp.). Forbs make up about 50%, major species being
nettleleaf giant-hyssop (Agastache urticifolia), western yarrow (Achillea
lanulosa), pea vine (Lathyrus sp.), meadowrue (Thalictrum sp.), and violet
(Viola spp.). Shrubs make up about 35%, major species being snowberry
(Symphoricarpos occidentalis), chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) and service-
berry (Amelanchier alnifolia).
The mountain shrub type is found on the steeper south facing slopes and
lower north facing slopes. Grasses make up about 15%, major species being
sedges, bromes, and wheat grasses (Agropyron spp.). Forbs make another approx-
imately 15%, major species being nettleleaf giant-hysop, western yarrow, and
pea vetch (Vicia sp.). Finally, shrubs make up about 70%, major species being
gambel oak ( uercus gambelii), snowberry, chokecherry and serviceberry.
The sagebrush type occurs mostly at elevations below the mountain shrub
' type but small patches are scattered among other habitat types. Grasses make
up about 15%, major species being bromes, bluegrasses, wheat grasses, and Idaho
' fescue (Festuca idahoensis). Forbs make up about 35%, major species being
mulesear (W ey thia amplexicaulis), lupine (Lu inus sp.), pea vetch and western
' yarrow. Shrubs make up about 50%, major species being sagebrush (Artemisia
tridentata), snowberry, and bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata).
1
-3-
1
