~~ :::>
;y
PIONEER CANYON PROJECT
Work Narrative
The fire investigation and control poject will consist of two phases. The
second phase will be undertaken if it is found feasible after investigation in
phase I.
Phase I Work:
A drilling program will be developed from information obtained from work which
was completed under the previous Coal Fires Project in the 10th Grant. It is
anticipated that 24-30 rotary drillholee with an average depth of 40-60 feet
will be needed to refine existing information and define the fire .= ach
drillhole will penetrate the coal and determine remaining coal and id
amounts. Samples of the mine atmosphere may be obtained and pressor
differentials within the minee may be determined. Drillholes will be grouted
upon retreat and thermocouples will be installed to monitor temperature
variations. The annular volume will be backfilled and the drillhole sealed.
No air will be allowed to enter into the drilled holes in an uncontrolled
fashion. Information developed in this phase will be used to develop the pilot
project in phase two, or alternatively, evaluate other abatement techniques
which appear more feasible.
