BOX 1526 <br />SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH 84130 <br />BO1-534-3600 <br />May 18, 1981 <br />Mr. Dan Mathews <br />Reclamation Specialist <br />Colorado Mined T....d Reclamation <br />1313 Sherman Street <br />Denver, CO 80203 <br />Re: Amendment to Western Slope Carbon's <br />Degasification Plan <br />Dear Dan: <br />~~ <br />Since my May 12, 1981 transmittal to you regarding our degasifi- <br />cation plans for the East Portal our engineers have come to the conclusion <br />that degasification of the area to be mined through the West Portal is <br />also a necessity. <br />As you know, mining with longwall type equignent caving behind <br />the longwall creates a much faster methane build-up than any other type <br />of mining method. <br />To avoid similar problems here, we are proposing to drill eight <br />(8) degasification wells above this area and begin degasification before <br />we begin any mining. <br />The locations of the proposed wells are shown on the attached map. <br />These wells will be drilled after degasification of the area above the <br />East Portal is complete. <br />Our archaeologist will do an archaeological survey on this area <br />this week.
