Box 980
GYPSUM, COLORADO $1657
(970) 524-9700
September 20, 2001 Fax: (970) 524-8140
RECEt~,E~
Mr. Gregg Squire ~ ~ ~~ 1~'1 / 9 ~yI G~l SEP 2 1 .~ `
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology r
1313 Sherman St., Room 215 Oiuision of Minerzls and Geala~y
Denver, Colorado 80203
Dear Gregg:
In recent review of our records it appears that a Notice of Proposed Backtill
Activity is apparently not on file for our on going mine reclamation project referred to as
the "old mine". This notice is in accordance with the rule described in 3.1.5(9) of the
Colorado Land Reclamation Act for the Extraction of Construction Material. The
reclamation site referred to is within the boundaries of DMG Permit #M1984-018. The
actual area of activity is approximately 10 acres.
The reclamation procedure at the site consists of backfilling previously mined
escarpments with waste (ofd spec) gypsum wallboard. Gypsum wallboazd is considered
to be inert material and the backfill material has been kept free from any other debris.
The backfill material is placed in one-foot lifts, compacted with a track dozer, and then
capped with intrusive clastic material (dirt and rock) that is available from the active
mining operation. Topsoil stored in the area is then utilized in 6" layers. Stockpiled tree
limbs (from pre-mining clearing operations) are also scattered for an additional
reclamation effect. Seeding takes place when a plot in the range of 0.5 to 1.0 acres is
ready for final reclamation.
It is possible that approximately 100,000 tons of wallboard will be placed in the
reclamation slopes before the project is completed. As I understand the Notice rules,
there is a requirement to submit approximate dates of proposed backfill activity -
although those dates are not an enforceable condition. Reclamation backfill activity in
this area should be competed in the early part of 2003 and final capping, topsoil
placement and seeding will follow shortly thereafter.
Please advise me of any further requirement to meet notice requirements - or if
any further clarification is required for the process.
Yours verb t~I ,
~:>`~
Stephen A.
