basin where it will be allowed to settle out prior to pumping into an adjacent private lake.
Replacements for the mining depletions will be made from a lease with the City of Loveland.
The lease will adequately account for the consumptive uses associated with the Loveland Pit
mining operation.
It is anticipated that mining will begin at the Loveland Pit in May of 2000.
PROJECTED CONSUMPTIVE USE
Water use at the site will include evaporation from the dewatering trench and collection azea,
dust control of haul roads and stockpiles, and water retained in material removed from the site.
Evaporative Losses
The NOAA Technical Report NWS 33, Evaporation Atias for the Contiguous 48 United States
(U.S. Department of Commerce) was used to determine gross evaporation. For this location, the
annual evaporation is 38.0 inches. Monthly evaporation percentages as suggested by the Office
of the State Engineer were used to calculate monthly evaporation.
Precipitation was estimated using Colorado Climate Center Website data. A copy has been
enclosed for your reference. Annual precipitation at this site was assumed to be equal to that at
the nearest gage station which is the Loveland NCWCD station. The annual mean precipitation is
14.75 inches (Table 1). Effective precipitation was calculated as 70% of total precipitation. Net
evaporation was then computed as the difference between gross evaporation and effective
precipitation. Net evaporation at the site was calculated to be 2.3 feet.
The mining operation will intercept the alluvial aquifer that supplies the Big Thompson River. In
order to allow for dry mining of the material, a dewatering trench will be excavated around the site
and be approximately 2,500 lineaz feet and 5 feet wide, which will expose approximately 0.3 acres.
Groundwater will flow along the trench by gravity to a 0.1 acre collection azea and will be
discharged into a private lake to the east of the Loveland Pit site owned by the landowner.
Total exposed surface azea in the dewatering trench and the collection area will be approximately
0.4 acre (Table 1).
The total evaporative consumptive use for the Loveland Pit was calculated to be 0.9 acre-feet
(Table 1).
Operational Losses
There will be excavation and stockpiling of mined material on site. The operator anticipates that
Page 2
