-13-
Quality of water in the lower Fruitland Formation has been found to be
marginal for use'as a domestic water supply. Sampling of this aquifer in the
original permit, Revision 1, and Barren Ridge areas revealed elevated levels
of sodium, calcium and sulfate. Overburden and coal analyses indicate that
the elevated levels of these parameters should be expected in any water
encountered in this zone.
A limited alluvial/colluvial aquifer probably exists in Deep Creek Canyon.
Well logs indicate that the depth of this material varies from 45 feet in the
northwest area of the canyon, to less then 5 feet in the northeast area.
During periods of snowmelt, these materials transport water down gradient and
vertically lower through the alluvial/colluvial profile. Except for material
adjacent to Deep Creek, this system transports water for a very short period
of time. Alluvium/colluvium adjacent to the creek probably supports some flow
for a longer period of time, perhaps into mid-summer.
The alluvial aquifer associated with Stollsteimer Creek receives some recharge
from the alluvial/colluvial material in Deep Creek Canyon, and from Deep Creek
itself. The amount of recharge contributed to the Stollsteimer alluvium from
the Deep Creek system is most likely limited when considering the entire
Stollsteimer alluvial aquifer system.
To ensure that the quantity and quality of ground water in Deep Creek Canyon
is not adversely affected, and to contribute to existing baseline data, the
operator has committed to the following:
Wells W-17 (D-3W) and W-18 (D4-W) will be sampled once for water quality
before any disturbance occurs in the canyon. The following parameters
will be analyzed in these wells, and all other ground water quality
sampling in Deep Canyon unless otherwise approved by the Division.
PARAMETERS
pH (field) Calcium Sulfate Lead
Specific conductivity (field) Magnesium Aluminum Manganese
Temperature (field) Ammonia Arsenic Mercury
Total dissolved solids Nitrate Cadmium Selenium
Bicarbonate (as CaC03) Sodium Iron Zinc
Sodium absorption ratio
The results of the sampling must be submitted to the Division within 90
days of the sampling date.
In addition to the above sampling, all current and future wells in Deep
Creek Canyon will be sampled as follows:
