III'I~I~~I~~~~~~~~~ perms r¢sources corporation ~~"'""'~~ ~L`~~'
9~
105 East Kiowa, Suite 200 • f? O. Box 2679 • Colorado Springs, Colorado • 80901 • (303) 475 -7005
July 18,1984
RECEIVED
Mr. Gregg Squire
Mined Land Reclamation Division
Denver, Colorado
Dear Gregg:
JUL 19 1984
"INED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISI01
Colo. Dept of Natural Resources
On July 17th, Mr. Ron Sassman of the Office of Surface Mining
inspected the Chimney Rock Mine. Although there were no ten
day notices issued, a couple of concerns were expressed by Mr.
Sassman which you should be aware of. They are as follows:
1. Drainage from the north half of the explosives storage
area (approximately one tenth acre) was determined to be
leaving the mine site over the north edge instead of
following established drainage patterns into sediment
pond 003. Although no runoff was present at the time of
the inspection, some evidence of runoff to the north was
present. A small berm was established around the north-
northeast edge of the area(see attached Mine Plan Map) to
prevent any future runoff. As a result of this prompt
action, a ten day notice was not issued.
2. The 100 ft. buffer zone west of Stollsteimer Creek and
south of the main haulroad(see Area of Concern on attached
Mine Plan Map) was determined to be intruded upon by
Mr. Sassman. My response to him was that Ditch 3F (see
Drainage Control, Map 8BR1) was approved inside the 100
ft. buffer zone to contain runoff of the reclaimed slope
in this area, and that some contamination of the area
was inevitible due to the steepness of the original slopes.
3. Drainage from the explosives storage area and landowner
access road is beginning to form an erosional channel
along the north edge of the reclaimed east slope. Although
it is not currently a major problem, Mr. Sassman suggested
a small ditch be made and rip-rapped to channel the
runoff and prevent erosion of the reclaimed slope. The
ditch would be made on previously unmined ground, approx-
imately 15 ft. north of the edge of the reclaimed slope
(see rip-rap channel on attached map).
These concerns will unboubtedly be expressed to you by Mr. Sassman
in the next few days. Please inform us of your decisions on these
items as soon as possible, and if I can be of any assistance
please call.
Sincerely,
~ `%y/~/J~YiV'~~
Randy Kroskob _ _
Chimney Rock Mine Engineer ~
