(UOS) Superfund Technical Assessment and <br />Response Team (START) in Region VIII by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). START was <br />tasked to collect surface water samples from the Rito Seco in Costilla County, Colorado. Tie sampling took <br />place on June 15, 2000. Seven samples were collected and analyzed for total metals (unfiltered) on the total <br />analyze list (TAL) metals, including mercury, and cyanide, as per the TDD, by Galson Laboratories, and the <br />data validation, as per the TDD, was completed by Tech Law, [nc. on July 28, 2000. <br />The Battle Mountain site location and [he sample locations are documented in Figure l . Table 1 presents the <br />field water quality parameters collected during [he sampling event. Table 2 presents the analytical results for <br />the sample analysis. The site photolog is included as Appendix A. The data validation report is included as <br />Appendix B. <br />SITE ACTIVITIES <br />EPA senior environmental employee (SEE) David Smink and START team member Batty Hayhurst mobi lized <br />to San Luis, Costilla County, Colorado on June 14, 2000. A brief drive-by recon of the pntposed sampling <br />area was conducted on the evening of 6/ 14/00 and it was determined that the site was not an a bandoned tailing <br />pile as had been previously reported, but that the site was active and staffed. No decisi ~n was made on <br />6/14/00 as [o when to contact the Battle Mountain site management, this decision was deferred until the local <br />representative could be contacted. <br />The sampling team met the local representative, Mr. Mike McGowan, at 8:00 am on the morning of June 15, <br />2000. Mr. McGowan shared his concerns about the Battle Mountain Mine site's potential effects of metal <br />contamination on [he Rito Seco and informed us that he would show us where [o sample. Mt.
