March 31, 1982
Page 2.
In regards to the hydrologic investigation of the Williams Fork and
Big Bottom alluvium, the attached report provides data from each area.
However, due to the characteristics of the Williams Fork alluvium, it
was decided, after consulting with David Craig of the MLRD, that a
pump test would not provide any beneficial information and therefore
the pump test was cancelled. The slug test performed on the various
wells completed in the Williams Fork alluvium was adequate to define
the hydrologic characteristics of the alluvium.
In regards to the Big Bottom investigation, all the wells have been
drilled, with slug testing of wells YAW-2 through YAW-7 completed,
excluding YAW-5. Due to ground conditions, the pump test was not
performed but as soon as ground conditions and staff scheduling allow,
it will be done. It is hoped that the pump test can be run within the
next two-three weeks.
At this time, it is requested that wells YAW-3 and YAW-6 be monitored
per MLRD requirements on chemical parameters. The monitoring of YA!d-3
has been previously committed to but Empire would like to substitute
well YAW-6 for YAW-2. This will provide water quality data for the
area overlying the first panel to be mined in the Big Bottom area.
Please advise if this request is approved by the respective agencies.
The final report attached to this letter provides information on the
occurrence of water in the 2 West area of the No. 5 Mine. Within this
report reference is made to an Exhibit B. However, at this time, this
exhibit is not available. Empire is awaiting further drilling infor-
mation, which should be available shortly, to complete this exhibit.
As soon as the exhibit is prepared, it will be forwarded to the MLRD
and OSM for incorporation into the report.
If you have any questions, please contact me at your convenience.
Sincerely,
Richard Mills
Environmental Engineer
RM/pb
Attachments
