HAYDEN GULCH TERMINAL, INC.
HAYDEN GULCH MINE
' 1. HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
' Hayden Gulch Terminal, [nc. (HGTI) operates the Hayden Gulch Mine, a surface coal mine, in
Routt County, Colorado. Operations at the Hayden Gulch Mine started in 1978. Permit C-1980-
003 was approved in January 1982. Coal production ceased in 1986 leaving approximately 366
acres of disturbed and partially reclaimed land. Reclamation activities were completed in the
' mining area in 1986 and the shop/facilities area in 1987.
Coal at the Hayden Gulch Mine was in five seams varying in thickness from 1.2 to 10 feet that
' dipped at approximately 10 percent in a northerly direction. Overburden and interburden consisted
of shale, siltstone and sandstone. The combined thickness of overburden and interburden ranged
' from 20 to 250 feet throughout the mining area. Mining progressed up the deposit in a southerly
direction with production of approximately one million tons per year.
' The landscape varies in elevation from 7,300 to 7,900 feet. The climate provides fora 60-day
growing season. The annual precipitation is l7 inches of moisture, most falling as snow. The
postmine land use for the Hayden Gulch Mine is wildlife habitat and livestock grazing.
A Partial Phase I bond release for [he mine pit area was approved in 1988. A second Partial Phase I
release for the shop/facilities area was approved in 1997. A Partial Phase II and Phase III bond
release was approved in June of 1999 for 357.3 acres of the permit area. Four parcels, totaling 8.9
acres, were reserved from the June 1999 bond release for the establishment of three shrub
enhancement areas and repair of a small slump area along the former highwall. Final Phase II and
Phase III bond release on the remaining 8.9 acres in the permit azea was approved in October 2006.
2. RECLAMATION
The Hayden Gulch Mine is unique in comparison to other nearby surface coal mines in that it was a
relatively small scale mining operation in terms of the aerial extent of the surface disturbance.
Reclamation created an open, park-like area which is essentially surrounded by heavy cover
composed of shrub species, predominantly Gambell oak, aspen, serviceberry/snowbeny, sagebrush
and chokecherry communities. The open, grassy environment of the reclaimed area has been very
attractive to big game species. Observations and monitoring at the site indicate that it is not
uncommon to see 100 to 200 head of elk on the property during some seasons of the year.
Hayden Gulch Mine 2006 Award Nomination Page
