~II ~I~'I~~I~~~~~~II
Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Division
Room 423 - 1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203
APR 2 01951
Gentlemen:
MINED LAND RECLAMATION~:COA1;
We wish to take this means to object to the granting ci6~1n~++~k~1y~ilrlingCES_
lease permits to Grand Coal Company in our area.
~POB 6913509
April 17, 1981
RECEIVED
As we do not know a great deal about what further development will bring and
we already have an air-shaft fan that makes the San Diego Freeway in Calif-
ornia sound like soft waves of an ocean, we feel an objection is in order.
We have repeatedly asked the personnel at the coal mine to please so some-
thing about the fan noise on the air-shaft, starting from when it was put
in up to date. The persons we have talked to are Mr. Paul Moore, Mr. Merlin
Fish and Mr. Rick Isom, we understand that Mr. Isom is no long with the company.
The first response we received from the mining company was that it was so late
in the fall and they could not do anything until it thawed out some due to the
snow and etc. Then in the spring is excuse was "there is so much mud, we will
have to get to it as soon as it dries up this summer." Then in late summer
of 1980 Mr. Paul Moore was in the Cedaredge Town Hall and made the comment to
my wife (Mary Lou Stein), "If your husband worked there you wouldn't be so apt
to complain about the noise." Whether I work for the mine or not has nothing
to do with a noise that wakes you out of a sound sleep or one that keeps you
awake all hours of the night. We. have had to resort to keeping the windows
closed in the summer, which is pretty sad when you have moved a thousand miles
to have the peace and quiet of a beautiful valley like Colby.
You can send an inspector almost anytime of the night or day to hear our "ROAR",
night would be best due to the quietness of the night air. During the winter
with the windows closed and our furnace going, which is a coal furnace with an
automatic stoker and blower, you can still hear the ''ROAR" from the fan on the
air-shaft.
We understand that there are a lot of things we have to put up with in order not
to stand in the way of progress ;.trespassing by mine employees (surface rights
to our property belong to us), fencing torn down to suit the mine (allowing our
horses to run fee) without any notice to us, rough dirt roads, extreme dust from
these dirt roads, heavy traffic, di'struction and disregard for irrigation ditches
and etc. But we just do not want to have to listen to anymore of these fans
that go on ai'r-shafts for mines, It would stand to reason that more of these
would have to go i'n~ i:f further leases are granted to Grand Mesa Coal Company
We moved to Colby ten (10) years ago, the mine was i'n operation then, but there
was not any noise except for 6lasti:ng every now and then, it was not done at
night to disturb our sleep,
Your consideration of this objection is appreciated. /~~ ~ ~ o
Sincerely, '~~'~~~~ `'' ~"" ~
cc: State Engineer t~y~~ s~ ~^-~
Charles E Mary Lou Stein
1918 - 2075 Drive
Cedaredge, Lolorado 81413
April 7, 1981
CERTIFIED MAIL
