Box 121:0
Grand Junction, CO 81502
Mr. Settle:
P.O. Box 2418
Grand Junction, CO 81$02
This report was developed by the Soil Conservation Service in response to
your request for soils and vegetation information For the proposed gravel pit
located neat 32 Road and the old landing strip. S~SW~SEC35T15R.1E
Soils
Soils on the site are s:denti£ied by the Soil Survey of Mesa County as Black-
stone etorl\y loam 3 to 2596 elope and Avalon loam 0 to 396 slope. (See enclosed
soils descriptions).
Ezisting Vegetations
Existing vegetation on the site includes, but is not limited ta:
~ Grasses
Galleta
Forbes, Shrubs. & Trees
Yucca
Prickly pear cactus
Shadacale ealtbush
Mat ealtbuah
Ralogeton
ReclamatLon Recommendations:
Succesefl:l reclamation and revegetation of this area ie dependent upon sev-
eral factoe other than the actual seeding. Final slope grades should not exceed
2:1 in steepness, with 3:1 or 1•:1 slopes being even better, In general, the
chances of successful revegetation increases as the percent slope decreases..
Small areas with elopes steeper than 3:1 are often unavoidable but should be
kept to a minimum.
During gravel extraction any topsoil should be striped and stockpiled £or
later use. This soil material should be spread our over the areas to be reseeded
to a depth of 6 to 6 inches. IInderlying material should be scarified to provide
a bond between substratum and the topsoil, It is realized that not .all areas
will be able to be topsoiled, however, as much area ae possible should be covered.
Without topsoiling, revegetation success in unlikely.
Seeding preparation ie probably the moat important factor deteTID]Slin$ the
/-, success in establishing permanent vegetative cover. Seed should be placed 4r'
to 1 inch deep in a friable but firm seedbed. All seed must be covered. Dril-
ling the seed ie preferred to broadcasting.
0 Tfte Soll Conservation Service SCS-AS-i
V is en aOencY of the 10-79
DeOertmem of Aprit ullure
