Common names are in bold; scientific
names are in parenthesis.
This unit is best suited to wildlife habitat, watershed, and limited timber production.
The major limitations affecting the production and harvest of timber are the slope, the rock
outcrop, and a susceptibility to erosion.
' 3.3.4 Wildlife
Wildlife species present on National Forest System land above the Pikeview Quarry
' azea have been identified by the Colorado Division of Wildlife in its statement dated June
30, 1977, for the Pikeview Quarry mine permit application. Those species include: bighorn
sheep, mule deer, coyote, golden eagle, raccoon, stripped skunk, golden mantled ground
t squirrel, rock squirrel, thirteen-lined ground squirrel, cottontail rabbit, deer mice, wood rat,
prairie falcon, red-tailed hawk, krestel, magpie, sparrows, raven, crow, Steller's jay,
hummingbirds, western tanager, and westem meadowlark. The bighorn sheep and mule
' deer serve as Management Indicator Species for this project. Management Indicator Species
are identified by the US Forest Service to determine the effects of management on wildlife.

Hydrosphere Resource Consultants, 1002 Walnul Street Suite 200, Boulder, CO 80302
