12. Tree planting on National Forest System lands
a) A minimum of at least 200 trees per acre will be planted on National Forest System
lands. Generally, Ponderosa pine will be planted on dryer sites with more southerly
aspects while Douglas fir will be planted on wetter sites which have more of a northern
aspect. Seedlings suitable for planting can be obtained from the Colorado State Forest
Service nursery, which will ensure that seed collected for seedling production was
obtained from trees growing under similar site conditions. Figure 2.1 shows
recommended locations for planting of each species. Several azeas will require planting
of Rocky Mountain juniper at the rate of 100 trees per acre. These azeas are shown in
Figure 2.1 and also include Gambel's oak and Mountain mahogany.
b) Tree planting will occur in the spring when soil moisture is optimal. Prior to planting,
bareroot seedlings will be dipped in a mycorrhizal solution or inocculant. Seedling
