' Pikeview Quarry Environmental Assessment Page 15
tined rakes will only be required if the surface is not sufficiently loose or if suitable seed
to soil contact is not achieved.
r ] 0. Broadcast seeding would occur preferably within five days of spreading the topsoil in
order to reduce the need to mechanically roughen surface crusting. If spreading of
topsoil occurs at a time no[ suitable for seeding, broadcast seeding will occur as soon as
the best conditions for seed growth take place.
The composition of the grass/forb seed mix to be used in National Forest System lands
' is presented in Table 2.2.
Native grass and forb seeds not commercially available would be hand collected during
the growing season (Summer/Fall) and properly stored until its application to the
restored areas. Most shrub and tree species should be obtained from the Colorado State
Forest Service. If not available, they should be locally collected on site and propagated
by a commercially available service. Preferred shrub species for re-establishment
include: Gambel's oak (Quercus gambelii), Soapweed yucca (Yucca glauca), Mountain
mahogany (Cercocarpus montanus), Wood's rose (Rosa woodsii), Cliff spirea
(Holodiscus dumosus), and Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi). Gambel's oak and
mountain mahogany would be propagated offsite, commercially, from local materials
and planted in zones indicated on the map in Figure 2.1, at the rate of 336/acre. The
other shrubs listed will be planted as nursery stock, as available, at the rate of 200/acre
in locations also shown on the map in Figure 2.1.
' These shrubs should be planted as tublings with watering at planting. The planting
process will include construction of a saucer azound each one, installation of anchored
landscape fabric (one squaze yazd), and placement of a wire cage (1" x 4" welded wire
cylinder, 3 fl. height, one foot diameter) anchored with rebaz. Supplemental watering
should be carried out during the fust growing season on at least a monthly basis. Also,
t polyacrylamides may be used to reduce competition from grasses and minimize
moisture fluctuations.
11. The composition of the seed mix proposed for use in private lands by the owner is
presented in Table 2.3.

1

Hydrosphcre Resource Consultants, 1002 Walnul Street Suite 200, Boulder, CO 80302
1
