Pikeview Quarry Environmental Assessment Page 13
Phase 2
' Mining operations under phase 2 include both federal lands and the already permitted
areas. First, limestone and granite from the lower part of the National Forest System land
would be hauled for processing and for filling and/or processing, respectively. The uplifted
sandstone would be used as fill material. Second, the layback operation will continue
towazd the east, into the area currently permitted for mining. Under this phase, 30-40 feet
high, 60-degree walls would be required in the granite. Additional backfill would be
' required to maintain the 2:1 slope to the bottom of the quarry. These benches would also
allow for catching materials that could fall off the slope.
Phase 3
This phase includes both mining and reclamation operations in the currently permitted
mining area. Also, it includes the removal of processing and maintenance facilities for the
existing quarry and final reclamation of slopes according to the 1994 base and enhanced
reclamation plans.
' B. Reclamation
' General Description
The reclamation phase of the proposed action would follow the production phase as
mining progresses from west to east. Final reclamation would be completed one to two
years after mining has been completed. Both base and enhanced reclamation on private land
would be implemented under [his alternative.
Plans, procedures, and standards for reclamation on National Forest System lands aze
different from those applicable to private lands. Where different, these distinctions aze
identified below.
t
The reclamation of public lands will be done in accordance with applicable USDA-
NRCS specifications, standazds and guidelines. USDA Forest Service standards specific to
' the use of plant material and seeded species from local native plants will also apply to the
reclamation activities. The reclamation plan described below includes performance
standazds, a monitoring plan to track performance, and plans for corrective action if
' performance standards are not being achieved. The Forest Service will work together with
the applicant during the reclamation activities to ensure the use of the best management
practices at the site.
T
i
i
he proposed m
n
ng area on National Forest System land has been identified as
Management Area SB in the Land and Resource Management Plan (USDA Forest Service,
1991), which emphasizes the management of forage and cover on big game winter ranges.
The reclamation of the National Forest System lands and of the currently permitted azea
affected by the layback would involve the following steps:

Hydrosphen; Resource Consultants, 1002 Walnut Street Suite 200, Boulder, CO 80302
