February 13, 1996
III IIIIIIIIIIIII III
999
:s; .
~* RECEIVED
FEE 2 0 19gs
Mr. Daniel V. Varhus
Department of Energy
Grand Junction Projects Office
P.O. Box 2567
Grand Junction, CO 81502-2567
Subject: Mining Lease No
Mining Lease No
Division of Minerals g, Geology
AT(OS-1)-ML-60.8-C-JD-5
AT(05-1)-ML-60.8-.C-SR-13
Dear Mr. Varhus:
Blake Mining Company was assigned the subject leases ir. late
1993 and has recently sent you a letter indicating Blake Mining
Company's intent to renew these same leases.
Both leases contain surface structures which are considered
to have historical value and which should be allowed to remain in
place after mining and subsequent reclamation have been completed.
These structures consist of the headframe at the JD-5 shaft and
the small steel ore bin at the portal of the Hawkeye Mine on SR-
13. Both structures are described and recommended for
preservation in the report "URAVAN MINERAL BELT, Inventory of Mine
Sites in the San Juan and Umcompahgre Basin Resource areas of the
Bureau of Land Management, Summer 1994". This report was prepared
by Timothy Kramer and Randall Patrick of ECO Associates. The
appropriate sections of this report are attached for your
reference. A complete copy can probably be obtained from the
Bureau of Land Management. If not we will provide one if you so
desire. Each structure is described in detail, as follows:
~ JD-5 Headframe: This is a small steel structure in
excellent condition above a concrete-lined circular mine
shaft, 16 feet inside diameter. The structure is solidly
supported on concrete foundations. It was constructed in
1974 or 1975 and is an excellent and well preserved
example of a modern small headframe. It is an appropriate
memorial to what may become the final era of uranium
mining on the Colorado Plateau.
* Hawkeye Ore Bin: This is a small steel ore bin and timber
retaining wall. It is located at the Junction of Colorado
Highway 141 and the road to the Burro Canyon mines and
Slick Rock mill site, approximately 1/4 mile east of the
Slick Rock store and cafe'. Because of its location and
uniqueness, it is frequently photographed by tourists
either driving along Highway 141 or rafting on the nearby
Dolores River. It was constructed in the early 1950's and
is an excellent example of the surface development that
was typical of Colorado Plateau uranium mines of that era.
W.T.
