III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
COLORADO WESTMORELAND INC. 999
9034 East Easter Place. Suite 205, Englewood. Colorado 80112 O 303-779-0902
October 27, 1983

OCT 311993
Honorable Richard D. Lamm
Governor
STATE OF COLORADO
State Capitol Building
Denver, CO 80203
MINED LAND RECLAPAATION DIVISION
Colo. Dept. of Natural Resources
Dear Governor Lamm:
On behalf of the two hundred fifty famil.tes dependent upon the Orchard
Valley Mine for their livelihoods, our community, and our customers --
which include [he Public Service Company of Colorado -- I want to tlinnk
you for your expression of concern to Congress on the impact of a leasing
moratorium upon us. We were able [o obtain an exception from the
moratorium, as you know, and we recognize your genuine expression of
concern for us conveyed an important message to Washington.
Now the Bureau of Land Management must follow through on Congress'
directive so that a lease sale in Febcuary is in fact held and we must
formulate a winning, acceptable fair market value bonus bid. These are
both significant tasks still ahead, but at least we now haee ;, shat at
getting the coal necessary to secure our suture and keep us corking.
As to that future, I want to reiterate our commitment as Coloradoans to
carry out the production of coal in an exemplary manner so that we and
Colorado can enjoy a deserved reputation of excellance in this area as we
do in others. With the continuing help of the dedicated and professional
people you have assembled at the Department of Natural Resources,
especially in the Mined Land Reclamation Division, we can do so.
I hope you will visit the Orchard Valley [•tine whenever your schedule
permits.
Again, our sincere thanks.
Very truly yours,
Christopher K.
