Memo to Erica Crosby, File No. M-90-57 9 October 18, 2001
CARCINOGEN STATUS: ACGIH: A4 -No[ Classifiable as a Human Carcinogen
LOCAL EFFECTS:
Corrosive: inhalation, skin, eye
ACUTE TOXICITY LEVEL:
Toxic: inhalation
MEDICAL CONDITIONS AGGRAVATED BY EXPOSURE: heart problems
TUMORIGENIC DATA: Available.
MUTAGENIC DATA: Available.
REPRODUCTIVE EFFECTS DATA: Available.
ECOTOXICITY DATA:
FISH TOXICITY: 390 ug/L 96 hour(s) LC50 (Mortality) Orangethroat darter (Etheostoma spec[abile)
INVERTEBRATE TOXICITY: 637.5 ug/L 1 hour(s) LC50 (Mortality) Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas)
ALGAL TOXICITY: 50-1000 ug/L 23 hour(s) (Population) Algae,phytoplankton,algal ma[ (Algae)
PHYTOTOXICITY: 20 ug/L 96 day(s) (Growth) Water-milfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum)
Recommendations
The copper sulfate stored in plastic buckets from cleanup of broken bags must be placed into tightly
closed containers.
The soda ash and lime dust must be stored in isolation from each other.
The chlorine and sulfur dioxide tanks must be stored outside or in a detached storage building were
people would not be regularly stationed.
A municipal landfill would likely accept any of the chemicals stored at this site except for the chlorine
and sulfur dioxide gas canisters. I would recommend [ha[ disposal costs for these canisters at $350.00
each be applied to the reclamation cost estimate used [o establish [he bond amount. The disposal costs
for the rest of these chemicals can be estimated using [he unit cost tables in the demolition spreadsheet
of the CIRCES cost estimating software.
cc: Carl Mount, DMG
m:Unin~acsUeadville m&m msds.doc
