specific purpose of documenting whether the revegetation success criteria with
respect to bond release had been satisfied.
Prior to initiation of field sampling, discussions were held w'dh Mr. Steve Viert,
who supervised the 1989 IMS field sampling as well as Ms. Catherine Begej of
the CMLRD. Ms. Begej also provided a listing identifying the reclamation
seeding date for each reclaimed area.
Authorization to initiate field sampling activities was received on 4 October 1990,
with instructions that sampling suitable for final bond release be conducted for
Pit 2 and sampling for Pits 1, 3, 5 and 6 be conducted consistent with
requirements for Phase II bond release. Sampling was conducted by Mr. Kent
.,a~~, ~.~`` Crofts of IME between 19 October 1990, and 24 October 1990. Mr. Crofts then
prepared the vegetation samples, completed necessary measurements,
recorded, evaluated and summarized the data as described in the following
discussion.
Vegetative cover measurements were obtained using a 50 meter long transact
tape with a total of 100 data points collected along each Vansect. Ten randomly
located sample sites were established along the Vansect tape and at each
sample site ten observation points were identfied using an inclined metal ten
point frame. For each observation point, the occurrence of individual plant
species, litter, bare ground and/or rock were recorded on field data forms. The
100 data points for each transact were then averaged into a single value which
was used as a datum point for subsequent statistical evaluations. Transact
locations were randomly established in the field. Using ahand-held calculator,
distance between Vansects and transact orientation were determined by means
of a random number generator. Each individual reclaimed area was sampled
separately in order to determine the corresponding level of revegetation
success.
2
