iii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiu
~~~
~~~
San Luis P~o~ect News
Fa111989 Informah'on on the San Luis Project, Costilla County, Colorado
SAN LUIS PROJECT UPDATE
Battle Mountain Requests Amendment to San Luis
Project Permit
On October 10, Battle Mountain Gold
applied for an amendment [o its previ-
ously-approved permit for the San Luis
Project.
Basically, the amendment eliminates
heap leach operations. Once the changes
are approved all San Luis Project ore will
be processed in tanks within [he plant
area, rather than through a combination of
milling and heap leaching.
Under the proposed changes, we will
build a mill with enough size to handle all
the ore we produce. We also will modify
the outline of three areas where we will
place overburden.
Other aspects of the project will
remain the same as covered by the
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board
(MLRB) permit issued on March 22,
1989.
WHY CHANGE?
Our current permit is an effective and
environmentally sound way of developing
the San Luis Project, as is our new
Q
TO TOWN OF SAN LUIS
3.4 MILES ___
f
~~ .
application. The existing permit was
issued by [he MLRB after Battle Mountain
met or exceeded all MLRB performance
standards.
However, as we have teamed more
about the project, our engineers and
consultants have been working to develop
a more efficient and economical process-
ing approach, which also addresses the
concerns voiced by a few members of the
community.
MUCH WILL STAY THE SAME
The new approach we are proposing
will allow us to recover more gold from
San Luis Project ores, in a safe and sound
way.
We continue to work to improve the
project in concert with the community's
interests.
Bu[ before we discuss [he changes,
we should point out what will stay the
same in our plans for the San Luis Project:
• Our plans for mining and reclaim-
ing the ore bodies themselves will remain
WATER
COLLECTED
FOR RE-USE
PROCESSED ORE
~ ~
DIVERSION
DITCH
v- ~ --
o laao xooo aooo
9LKE IN FEET
the same. Tht se plans and designs already
have been jud3ed environmentally sound
by the MLRB and aze approved in the
current permit.
• We will mine the same amount of
ore-about 12.2 million tons in all-at the
same rate of 4,700 tons a day over a seven
to l0 year per od. Of course, actual
mining rates are subject to modification by
a number of economic and operating
factors which cannot be foreseen at [his
time.
• Our mule will produce the same
amount of barren rock, or overburden, as
provided for under the curtent permit,
although we are making. minor changes in
where we loct a any rock which we
cannot process.
• Our reclamation plans will remain
[he same, as has already been approved by
the MLRB.
• The ovl;mll permit boundary will
remain the satne.
(continued on page 2)
SS
OVERBURDEN
TO HIGHWAY 159
~~~ 3-4 MILES
i \~~Oo
~~ ~4
~\ J`
B~CO ~\\ 9
~\'e `,
C~~f+'~~ ~ •\
~ ~~~
\\
~ ~~ ,
HAUL ROAD 1\\
l\\\ o~
\\ ~9
\\ ~c
~PEHYIT SOUNDAaT
\ ~\
~_ \ \\ of T,\
TO MINE AREA
t/2 MILE
SAN LU[S PROJECT AREA Affected by Pernit Amendment
