We offer
the following information for your use.
The area indicated is within an area mapped as winter range
for both elk and mule deer. Although use of this area by mule deer
is somewhat limited, Bob Holder, District wildlife Manager,
indicates that elk use is more substantial. Additionally, because
of the presence of mast producing species, the area also is used
heavily by black bear, in the fall, prior to denning. Finally, the
South Fork of the Purqatoire River provides winter habitat for bald
eagle.
We believe that potential conflicts between these species and
coal exploration activities can be minimized or avoided entirely
with proper timing. We recommend that your exploration activities
be scheduled so as to avoid the period from August 15 through
October 1st (black bear), and December 1st through March 31st
(deer, elk, and bald eagle).
If you have any questions or require further clarification
please feel free to call me at (719)437-2945 x227.
cerely
avid r
wildlife B'ologist
Approved by: ~ %~ 1/
Ronald P.
