Carl Mount
December 15, 1989
Page 3
Currently, the Joshua Spring is being used as a water
source and appeared to be in good condition. The Peter
Spring has not been used for some time and is severely
silted. The Joshua Spring is currently in Peabody`s
hydrologic monitoring program (Site S-7). The current
monitoring schedule (semi-annual) will be adequate to
characterize discharge and water quality at this site. The
Peter Spring was contained in Peabody's monitoring program
in 1983 (then Site S-7). Peabody feels that the three
samples collected in 1963 are adequate to characterize this
site. Further, the extremely low discharge and lack of
development at Peter Spring precludes the need for further
monitoring.
Smith Ditches
The Hollatz Ditch No. 1 and No. 2 are located on D. Smith's
property southeast and northwest of his house, respectively.
These ditches are used to irrigate hay land during the flow
season. Each ditch is approximately 3' w x 1' d, and is
constructed in unconsolidated alluvial material. No bedrock
material was observed. Since no water flow was present, no
measurements were obtained at the time surveys were
conducted. Peabody feels that flow measurements in the
ditches are unwarranted due to the nature of their
construction and the distance from mine-related blasting.
Further, the manner in which water is diverted from
Hubberson Gulch and variable water supply and demand for
irrigation purposes, precludes the ability to make
meaningful interpretation of flow data. Sampling for
quality is not applicable and need not be performed because
the ditches are upstream of any surface water-related
impacts that could potentially be induced by mining
activities.
If you have any questions, please contact Jim Lunan or me.
Respectful y,
~,
Fred Fest
Manager
Compliance Engineering
bd
