A pre-mine soils map for the reclaimed area is also included.
Pre-mine soils data is available in the permit.
According to the Matt Hayes work, the pre-mine pinon-juniper
community consisted of 3.3A4 absolute cover of perennial grasses,
0.7Ai cryptograms, 14.OA; shrubs and 35.3Ai trees. Since the post-
mining land use is grazing, grasses and forbs should dominate the
vegetation. Also, the canopy cover from trees cannot be directly
converted into herbaceous cover.
Using the information cited above, we would like to propose the
following revegetation standard:
Total absolute aerial cover: 32.0%
Relative vegetation cover: grasses 45-65%
forbs 35-40AS
shrubs/trees 1- SAS
Productivity: 400 lbs (air dry) per acre
The aerial cover of 32.OAS is more than adequate to control
erosion and will likely result in less erosion than the original
pinon-juniper community.
I fully realize that we are treading new ground with proposing a
vegetation standard but I feel that it is the most logical method
for determining revegetation success when the community has
radically changed from the pre-mining to the post-mining
condition.
Sincerely yours,
~~ ~1iC.cJ~C.P,>~
are9 Lewicki
Oreg Lewicki and Associates
