`~ III IIIIII~IIIIIIIII ~o <br />AU G 2 3 1989 <br />Dear Editor and/ or General Public MINEDI.ANQ <br />R~QI,#~MA1`I4N +aIVIfi14N <br />First of all I would like to point out that this letter is to <br />be recognized solely as an instrument to be used under articals <br />~1 and #14 of the Amendent to the Federal constition whlch are <br />Freedom of Speech, and Freedom of the Press for the dissement- <br />-ion to the general public for awareness to a grave problem in <br />our fair and colorful community of Trinidad, Colorado. <br />This letter is to be used only to bring public awareness to <br />our nearby neighbors such as Raton, Starkville, Cokadale, <br />Aguilar, Ludlow, Hoehne, Walsenburg, and many other hiator- <br />-ical towns with points of interest to the tourists,, residents <br />of these communities, and previous residents of these communit- <br />ies, We the public are faced with a future open pit strip <br />miner who is about to destroy the ancient coal mining "Ghost <br />Town" of Engleville, Colorado located approximately about 2~ <br />miles South East of Trinidad, Colorado, which in turn x111 <br />mutilate and deface our beloved landmark that represents the <br />City of Trinidad, and the County of Las Animas, Colorado. <br />Incidentally Las Animas County covers 1},798 square miles, end <br />it is nearly four times the size of the entire State of Rhode <br />Island which covers only 1,21(} square miles. <br />According to Mr. Michael Ossola who is the Director of the <br />Planning and Land Use Office for Las Animas County said quote: <br />"This miner has his application going through the Department <br />of Land and Reclamation (3trip Mining Division)." <br />"His application will probably be approved approximately some- <br />time in this month of August or $eptmember" <br />
