Lochhead
Executive Director
Michael B. Long
Division Director
FROM: Jim Pendleton
RE: Third
Tatum Residence
At your request, I accompanied Jesse Craft, PhD. and Mike Rosenthal of the OSM
to examine the Tatum residence near Weston, Colorado on May 19, 1995. Dr.
Craft is a member of the staff of the OSM Pittsburgh Eastern Support Center, with
expertise in the prediction of subsidence ground movement. Our examination
consisted of a walk through with Carl Gerity, consultant to the Tatums. Ralph
Lopez and Larry Bennett, representatives of Basin Resources accompanied the
tour. Jesse had examined the
earlier OS /Tatum correspondence and the Woodward-Clyde Allen mine report,
and an additional pillar strength report prepared by Dr. Michael Beniawski for the
OSM.
Having completed my third detailed examination of the interior and exterior
disturbance to the structure, I dedicated the majority of my time to the examination
of the photographs of the house contained in the book entitled "Mitch", which
belongs to the Tatums. These undated photographs appear to have been taken in
the thirties, based on the attire of individuals in the photos and the fact that haying
was being conducted by horse and wagon. "Mitch - On the Trail of the Old West",
was written by Dean Krakel, published by Powder River Book Company, and
copywritten in 1981. "Mitch" is a personal biography of Arthur Ray Mitchell,
western artist. Mr. Mitchell spent extended periods in the Trinidad area and was
