Gunnison Mine $i- Modification
Dear Ms. Sudler:
ARCO Coal Company is planning to modify its Mt. Gunnison ~1
underground mining plan to include the extraction of a lower,
second, seam of coal (B Seam). This coal will be taken from a
portion of their approved Mt. Gunnison ii permit area. In
addition, they wish to add 36 acres to the permit area to allow
underground entry to the B seam.
No surface modifications are planned for the additional 36 acres
(located in sections 29 and 30 T135, R90W as shown on enclosed
map) nor in connection with the mining of the B seam. The second
seam (B seam) mining plan is to utilize longwall mining
techniques while the approved upper F seam mining will continue
to use room and pillar methods. The lower seam mine area lies at
least 400 feet below the upper seam mine area, which in turn lies
at least 400 feet below the surface. Subsidence effects are
expected to be minimal for most of the permit area. The area most
likely to experience maximum subsidence is located in the E1/2
and E1/2 of the W1/2 of section 20, T13S, R90W, where both the
seams will be mined. Subsidence in this area may be up to 10
feet, though leas 1s expected.
The Mt. Gunnison Mine (fl permit area has received your attention
several times in the past, as evidenced by your letters dated
June 1 and"~duly..l 1, 1977. These indicate that the SHPO and the
State Archaeologist were satisfied with the archaeological
reconnaissance survey of 460 acres conducted for the area by
Applegrath and Hurlbert. Neither of the too historic occupation
sites recorded by the survey (5 GN 036 and 5 GN 037) will be
impacted (even by subsidence) by the project. In August, 1982 an
additional 30 acres of land potentially disturbed by drilling and
road construction were intensively surveyed by the Grand River
Institute. The inventory located no cultural resources (report
enclosed). In August, 1985 we received a "no effect"
determination Prom your office for a 320 acre expansion of
