The mine is currently produdng at a rate of about 1.5 million tons of dean coal per
year.
The Deserado Mine is a'state of the art' longwall underground coal mine utilizing continuous miners
to develop longwall gateroads and main entries. Run-of-mine coal is fed to a coal preparation plant
on ttre surface which removes non-coal material inadvertantly mined from the coal seam roof and
floor as well as non-coal inseam partings. Clean coal from the preparation plant is transported by
1 an overland belt conveyor 3.5 miles in length to a 25,000 ton covered slot storage facility. Clean
coal from the slot storage is then tact to a railroad coal loadout facility. Then a 35-car unit train
transports the coal 37 miles over the electrified Deseret-Westem Railroad to the Bonanza Power
Station, located in Utah. Refuse (non-coal material) preparation plant is hauled about 3.5 miles to
the northeast of the mine site and placed in refuse embankments. The Deserado Mine and
Deseret-Westem Railroad currently employ 258 people.
~ Westem Fuels-Utah Inc.'s Deserado Mine has received the following achievement awards:
• 1986 Annual Colorado Reclamation Award for large underground mines.
