Letter to Mr. Schlueter
July 23, 1979
Page 2
important. Cultivation of weeds around seedlings prevents
the weeds from stealing water and nutrients. Grasshoppers
love seedling trees and shrubs. So a spray program will
be necessary.
4. The trees should be spaced at least 15 feet apart. Even though
these are seedlings, willows and cottonwoods grow very
fast (2-5 feet a year} expecialTy if they are well cared
for. In 5-10 years some of the cottonwoods should be removed
to avoid an overcrowded unhealthy condition.
5. The shrubs are more tolerant of crowding so they can be
spaced from 2-4 feet. Caragana and American plum are tall
shrubs, space them 4 feet apart. The others are small to
medium size shrubs. Space them 2-3 feet apart.
6. It is not critical but a mulch of 3-5 inches around the
seedlings will retard water loss through evaporation.
As future problems arise feel free to contact this office for infor-
mation.
