contain leased Federal coal, the mining plan area acreage
• has been reduced by about 10 acres to account for the
unexplained 1982 discrepancy. A history of the leasing and
mining plan approval actions for the King Coal Mine is
included in the Chronology Section of this decision
document.
A total of 4.2 million tons of Federal coal exist in the
currently approved mining plan area.
No Federal surface lands exist in the currently approved
mining plan area.
The postmining land use within the currently approved mining
plan area is rangeland, pastureland and cropland.
IV. The Proposed Action
This mining plan action consists of a mining plan
modification for Federal lease COC-60941. Specifically, the
mining plan modification proposed by NKC consists of:
Expansion of mining into all of the Menefee Coal Bed
No. 1 of the 195-acre Federal lease COC-60941.
• The life of the mining operations is expected to continue
for 5 years under Colorado Permit No. CO-81-035 and this
proposed mining plan modification.
The average annual production rate and the maximum
production rate would not change,
The approved State permit area would increase by 195 acres
from its present 1577 acres to a new total of 1772 acres.
Surface disturbance within the approved State permit area
will not increase.
Approval of this mining plan modification will increase the
number of acres of Federal coal in the approved mining plan
area by 195 acres to a new total of 1048 acres as shown on
the map included with this decision document.
Total Federal recoverable coal reserves for the Menefee Coal
Bed No. 1 seam within the current mining plan approval area
would increase by 0.6 million tons for a new total of 4.8
million tons.
No Federal surface lands will be included in the mining plan
area as a result of this action.
•
