spillway inlet.
D. Surface and Ground Water Monitoring
Surface Water
The surface water monitoring program is addressed in Section 2.5 of the application text,
parameter list is presented in Table 2.5-2, and monitoring site locations aze shown on
Figure 2.3-5.
Adequate baseline data indicating characteristics of water quantity and quality for East
Salt Creek in the vicinity of Munger Canyon and for the drainage in Munger Canyon was
provided in the original permit application, summarized in Section 4.5 of the application
text. Total dissolved solids in East Salt Creek have been noted over a range of 600 mg/1
to 10,000 mgfl. Water is typically a sodium sulfate type.
In Munger Creek, like most semi-arid ephemeral drainages, dissolved constituents in
surface water often reach high levels during storm runoff. Dissolved solids measured in
Munger Canyon ranged from 92 mgll in December to 956 mgll in April.
Subsequent to issuance of the initial permanent regulatory program permit, the operator
implemented a plan for the collection, recording and reporting of surface water quality
and quantity data. The program consists of surface water monitoring above and below
the disturbance in the Munger Canyon tributary, along Munger Canyon before the
confluence with East Salt Creek and along East Salt Creek upstream and downstream of
the confluence with Munger Canyon. This monitoring plan will be sufficient to identify
any effects of the operation on the surface water hydrology. The hydrology monitoring
program for the Munger Canyon Mine is in part combined with the monitoring program
for the adjacent McClane Canyon Mine, which is also operated by CAM, and data
collected at several of the sites fulfills monitoring requirements for both pemuts. A
combined Annual Hydrology Report with sample data, summaries, and impact
assessment for each mine is submitted by Mazch 31 of each year, covering the previous
water year.
The operator has committed to the following surface water monitoring program:
1) Flow measurements will be taken at surface water monitoring sites SW-1,
upstream from the mine on East Salt Creek, and SW-3, in Munger Creek
downstream from the mine site. The measurements will be taken twice a year if
water is available to sample. Measurements will be taken once during spring
snow melt and once during a storm event.
2) Water quality samples of East Salt Creek will be collected quarterly at sites SW-1,
SW-4 and SW-8. SW-8 is located between McClane and Munger Canyons on
East Salt Creek. S W-4 is located downstream of the confluence of Munger Creek
23
