•
7. Las-Glendive Association
Soda of the flood pla~nF m:d lou• terraces
This nssociatimt Deco lies the bottom (ands end terraces
iu the caller of the Aransas Ricer and along its u•ibu-
tnries (fig. B, p. 8). .host. of the as_cociat ion is near]}- level.
The soils eonstst of alluvial materials that care ex-
tremely in feature, depth, and drainage. These soils
range from sand and grace] to elec.
The Las and Gleudn-e soils are dominant in this as-
sociation, and there are smaller acreages of Havre,
liortunan, Las Auimns, Lincoln, and Rocky Ford soils.
The Lns and Las Animas soils occur on the flood plains
end normally here n moderetelc hilt or high cater
table. The salinity of these soils canes. The Lns soils
hate a clay loam surface layer and a clay loam to clay
subsoil. Although Las soils ere normally effected by
salt and a high eater table, they are farmed intensively
under irriggation in areas that hate. been drained. Some
Las soils, hoscecer, are difficult to drain because they are
clacey. Las Animas soils at•e stratified, sandy, and if
drained, are eery droughts. Thep are used mainly for
range consisting of native grasses.
The Glendise, Havre, ]iornman, Lincoln, and Rocln•
Fm•d soils are cell drained to excessicelp drained. The
Glendise and lioruman soils nre sands and base a ]oe
moisiwre-holding cepacitp, but the}- are cultisnted wider
irrigation. The sut•face lacer of the lion~mnn soils is
deeper than that of the Glendise soils. The Havre and
Rocks Ford soils nre lime and medium textured. The
Havre soils occur on lon terraces and pace a thin ]Dams
sm•face layer and a subsoil that is strntified eith sands
material. The Rocky Fw•d soils hate a thick, moder-
atel}• fine textured surface leper that consists of material
brought in by irrigation mater. The Lincoln soils occur
along the stream channels and are likely to be flooded
frequently. Thep are sere sandy and grnsellc and in
mint wrens are covered eith grasses, tamarisk, and cot-
toueood Uees.
The Las. Glendise, Havre• lioruman, and Rocky Ford
soils produce all crops suited to the area, inclndin~
alfalfa. beers, cm•u, sm~lnuu- small grains, onions, and
melons. The principal problems of management are
handling irrigation enter. maintaining fertility, reducing
siltation, improsing drainage, end correcting salinity.
~ a~niat i v
SOILS DESCRIPTION
