1

t

Route 83 -There is approximately a two mile length along Route 83 where travelers can look
directly to the west and see the quarry mesa. The mining operation will be one to two miles
away from Route 83. This road is a paved State highway and has a high travel speed, thus driver
attentions are directed more toward the road rather than sideways. Passengers can glance to the
side and see the operation, but again, the depressed nature of the mining operation will reduce the
views.
At speeds of 55 mph, the view duration is two minutes. The extent of the operation is obscured
because the viewing distance is one to two miles away. The number of possible viewers is low
due to the distance and depressed excavation and processing activity.
Figures 3.H.5(2) through 3.H.5(7) aze cross sections showing views of the operation from six
different locations on roads surrounding the operation. These cross sections demonstrate how
terrain and the depressed mining partially shield the site. The visual analysis map includes the
location and viewing direction.
Homes

1

1

1
l_J
There aze twenty-six homes located within one mile of the proposed permitted boundary area of
the Castle Rock Quarry. The Ditmars Quarry has 238 homes located within one mile of the
permitted boundary. Having a fewer number of residential properties near the Castle Rock
Quarry would have a visual impact advantage over our current Ditmars operation.
Figure 3.B.1 (1) (2) illustrate the homes located within one mile of the permitted and the
proposed permitted azea.
Castlewood Canyon State Park
The State park is located along Cherry Creek over one mile north of the quarry site. The pazk
facilities are located in the canyon and no part of the quarry site can be seen. The visitor center
and restrooms of the park off SH 83 aze located on the north line of Section 26 and are about one
mile from the neazest excavation disturbance. Because State pazk land is one mile or more away
and is lower than the quarry site and because the mining operation is depressed, visitors to the
State park will not be able to see the quarry operation. Most of the pazk attendance occurs on the
weekends when the mine is usually not in operation. Visitors to the pazk will not be awaze of the
mining operation and their recreational experience will not be diminished.
Magnitude of visu~.~/ iin~acts
Great care has been Taken in siting the quarry operation and blending it into the landscape.
Careful planning in consideration of the advantages provided by the natural ]andfonn results in
few and quite distant viewpoints of the quarry. Only foty miles of road surrounding the site will
have a partial view of the quarry operation. Here, people are driving in automobiles and are
generally distracted frcm side views.
29
