Woody Plant Density: The density of shrubs and trees is sampled in reclaimed areas. Concentrated
• shrub and hee planting areas aze delineated and sampled separately from the general reclamation.
Values aze presented as stems pet 100 square meter and stems per acre.
Species List A list of all plant species observed doting sampling is developed.
Species Density: A measure of the number of speces per 100 squaze meters determined at the cover
sampling locations is developed and referred to as "Species Density."
SUMMARY
• All pit/training areas have been bacltfdled and regraded (1,100 acres). Remaining azeas consist of
roads and ancillary facilities (148 acres).
• During 2006 (rinre end ofminin~
- 159 acres have been backfilled andgraded
- 110 acres have been topsoiled
- 79 acres have been seeded
• 2005 vegetation monitoring results (on areas reclaimed in 1998 and 2003) show the revegetation
attempts have been successful with an average production of 2,525 and 3,10816 per aae oven-dry
weight respectively. The requirement for Phase III bond release is 1,25016 per acre.
• The overall woody plant density (stems/acre) comparison between 1998 reclaimed area (1,299)
and 2003 reclaimed azea (32.4) shows a significant upwazd trend. The permit requirement is 200
• stems per acre for Phase III bond release.
• The species density averaged 33.1 (1995 area) and 37.9 (2003 azea) spedes per 100 sq. meters.
The species density is similaz to the results collected from the undisturbed reference azeas.
• Partidpated with the USFS in a pilot study to exatnine feasibility of using supplemental drip
irrigation to establish aspen on reclaimed azeas.
• Over 140,000 trees and shrubs have been planted at the II-W Mine to date in fenced and
unfenced plots. 40,400 trees and shrubs were planted is 2006.
•
Seneca II-W 1006 Award Nomination page 5
