He stated that a leak
had developed in a fire water system pipeline on December 13, 2004. The fire water system is fed by process
water stored in the large capacity mill water tanks located east of the mill. The mill water is high in total
dissolved solids, but is not contaminated by high concentrations of the more toxic heavy metals. The most
significant contaminants in the mill water are manganese, which runs azound 10 to 30 mg/L and sulfate, which
runs 1000 to 1600 mg/L. Both sulfate and manganese are secondary drinking water contaminants.
Most of the leak water flowed into Bear Paw Gulch, which is tributary to the tailing impoundment. Henderson
conservatively estimates that as much as 25,000 gallons may have escaped containment of Bear Paw Gulch, and
flowed northeast toward the Williams Fork River. This water was consumed by the snow pack, and no direct
discharge to the river is believed to have occurred. Henderson does not believe any damage to human health or
the environment occurred as a result of the leak. Henderson will file a written report on this matter in
accordance with Rule 8 of the Hard Rock/Metal mining Rules and Regulations of the Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Boazd.
cc: Tim Haynes, Henderson Mill (via email)
Bruce Humphries, DMG (via email)
Cazl Mount, DMG (via email)
o:\acs\LOANER MACHINE\My DocumentsViendersonrnill water spill MTF.doc
Office of Office of Colorado 'l
Mined Land Reclamation Active and Inactive Mines Geological Survey'
